Translation under the standards of Academic English and Research Paper Writing: from Russian into English.

This post is about one of academic articles I had translated before. Maybe you didn’t know but, but the academic standards of Research Paper Writing differ in different regions. Today I will tell about one of CIS academic publications which had to be published in EU journal, but it was written and GOST academic standard.

The title of the article was “THE ISLAMIC EDUCATION CONCEPT OF NATIONAL SECURITY WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF MODERN ISLAM IDEOLOGICAL MOVEMENTS” by Beisenbayev Baktybay, doctoral candidate of the Egyptian University of Islamic Culture “Nur Mubarak”. The client of this project was WorlSciPubl ltd..

First of all I would like to share the most important detail within the scope of work with the Russian to English translation in the field of academic Research Paper Writing. This detail refers to the difference in the style of sentences between Academic English and Academic Russian texts.

In Academic Russian the authors often use Passive Voice in order to formalize the text and exclude their personality from the narrative as to underline the scientific trend of the work, but not their subjective frame of reference. Unfortunately, even though, the text in most cases stays quite subjective, but the style hides this feature somehow.

In Academic English the sentences have the direct order of words or Active Voice. The author bears responsibility for the opinion and arguments. Moreover, each argument is formulated in a clear manner; the arguments are designed on the basis of conceptualization and research questions.

The difference between academic approaches in CIS and English-speaking countries puts the translator in such position when he or she has to transform and reformulate the initial text into the reality of the other scientific and contextual culture.

If we speak about the article “THE ISLAMIC EDUCATION CONCEPT OF NATIONAL SECURITY WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF MODERN ISLAM IDEOLOGICAL MOVEMENTS” by Beisenbayev Baktybay, doctoral candidate of the Egyptian University of Islamic Culture “Nur Mubarak”, we can highlight several distinctive features common to the method of translation from Russian into Academic English throughout the whole text.

Firstly, we transform Russian Passive Voice sentences into Active Voice. Secondly we transform the order of words in sentences with Passive Voice, starting our translation from the end. Thirdly we do the terms check via glossary and vocabulary.

You can look through the bilingual file of the translated article here.

The whole translation was made according to these three principles.
